2023 Global Youth Forum

Background

• ●In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice, the 2023 Global Youth Forum aims to bring together young people from 16 United Nations (UN) states that sent combat units and 6 countries that provided medical support to UN troops during the Korean War to rediscover and reflect on the meaning of peace.

• ●The forum aims to provide an opportunity for dialogue on peace and sustainability among young people and to establish a global network of young people to continue such dialogue.

General Information

• ●Date: (forum) July 26th – 28th, 2023 / (pre-forum sessions) May-July, 2023

• ●Venue: (forum) Seoul, Republic of Korea / (pre-forum sessions) online

• ●Official language: English (Simultaneous interpretation will be provided during the official forum schedule.)

• ●Host: Ministry of Education, Republic of Korea

• ●Organizer: Korean National Commission for UNESCO

Participants

• ●The forum is open to 70 people aged between 19 and 34. This will include approximately 35 international and 35 Korean participants. International participants will include both youth coming from overseas and those residing in the Republic of Korea.

• ●International participants must be from one of the following 22 countries that assisted the Republic of Korea during the Korean War (countries listed in alphabetical order):

• ●Sent combat units: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Ethiopia, France, Greece, New Zealand, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, Türkiye, United Kingdom, United States

• ●Provided medical support: Denmark, Germany, India, Italy, Norway, Sweden

Assistance & Benefits

• ●A certificate of completion will be issued to all participants.

• ●Participants from overseas will be provided with a round-trip flight ticket to Seoul to attend the forum as well as accommodation, meals, and transportation during the forum.

• ●Announcement of accepted participants: by April 14th, 2023

• ●Submission of applications: International participants outside the Republic of Korea can apply by submitting the application form to 2023youthforum@unesco.or.kr

• ●Qualifications:
  - Age 19-34 (on July 27th, 2023)
  - Ability to communicate in English
  - (desirable) Descendants of Korean War veterans
  - (desirable) Those who reside or have resided in the Republic of Korea and/or have studied/are studying a topic related to the forum (e.g. Korean Studies, International Relations)
  * In the case of insufficient suitable applications from youth overseas, additional international students residing in South Korea will be selected.
